Jeans. Denim. Levis. Jeggings. Bootcut. Straight Cut. Boyfriend Jeans. Carpenter’s pants. Whatever style or name you have for them, they’re known for two things, depending on how you wear them: durability, and wearing out.

Clothes are getting cheaper and made to be thrown out sooner and jeans are no exception these days. You could mend them, but after a while, they’re more patches than original jeans. And crotch seams can’t be fixed (I’ve asked).
So, does you r pile of blue cotton—and possibly mixed with spandex or polyester—go in the landfill?
Actually, there are many ways to recycle old jeans. First, Blue Jeans Go Green is a site where you can mail in your broken denim by the pound. For free, as long as you have a box. Denim gets recycled into new jeans, insulation, or anything else cotton can be used for and the spandex and polyester into something else.

For clothing made our of pet-safe dyes, there are lots of various pet toys to create from cutting the jeans or strings into strips and braiding them into ropes. You can even wrap them around a post and have kitty enjoy shredding them even more. Just be careful that your pets do not eat the string.

My favorite when it comes to dyes that don’t bleed, is to turn them into mulch. Sure, it may not look great, but even a small, irregular patch of porous fabric can hold back weeds while letting water seep down to the roots of your flowers or vegetables.

Until then, wear them out. You can layer pantyhose, socks, and leggings under those holes if you don’t want to patch them, and if you do, there are tons of options, from more denim, to graphic patches, to lace, to leather, even to feathers or beads. You don’t even have to wait for those holes if you want to add those now. Just take comfort that there are lots of ways besides the trashcan to take them when you’re done, no matter how long it takes for that to happen.
